Two prototype architectures for rational interacting agents

چکیده

Two of the central features that determine how an agent reasons and acts in the world are its attitudes (knowledge, beliefs, goals, values, etc.) and its architecture. In this paper, we present and discuss two alternative agent architectures than have been implemented for different purposes — one as a tool to help designers to think about systems from a user’s perspective, and the other as an argumentative agent to work in an educational setting. Both architectures embody simple principles of rationality, but the different requirements on the design of the systems resulted in the specification and implementation of subtly but substantively different architectures. We discuss some of the reasons for this and draw out some common themes for future work on the design of rational agents.

An architecture for rational agents interacting with complex environments

Artificial Intelligence encompasses the enterprise of building an intelligent agent. To this purpose, the notions of agency and intelligence need to be precisely defined. Much to our demise, intelligence has proved to be hard to grasp in a formal way. To overcome this, Stuart Russell— among others—propounded rational agency as an alternative characterization for intelligent agency. In his own w...

Formal Specification of Reflective Agents

Many autonomous agents exhibit reflective behaviour: they not only reason about their own behaviour, but also about other agents' behaviour. To model and formally specify such behaviour requires a framework which provides constructs designed for this purpose. Execution architectures for program algebra

We investigate the notion of an execution architecture in the setting of the program algebra PGA, and distinguish two sorts of these: analytic architectures, designed for the purpose of explanation and provided with a process-algebraic, compositional semantics, and synthetic architectures, focusing on how a program may be a physical part of an execution architecture. Then we discuss in detail t...

Rational and Religious Roots of Peaceful Coexistence with the Religious Other

In this article, rational arguments and religious teachings that underlie the necessity of peaceful coexistence with the followers of other religions will be discussed. Moreover, the core impediments to coexistence, such as lacking self-knowledge and being ignorant about the others, will be examined, and practical ways for effectively interacting with the followers of other religions will be su...
